The Neutralization Process:

Neutralization typically involves adjusting the pH of the wastewater to a neutral range (around 6.0 to 9.0) by adding chemical reagents:

  • For acidic waste, bases like caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), soda ash (sodium carbonate), or lime (calcium hydroxide) are added.
  • For alkaline waste, acids like sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid are added.

This is usually just one step in a comprehensive wastewater treatment process that may also include screening, sedimentation, biological treatment, filtration, and disinfection to remove other contaminants before discharge.

In summary, responsible and compliant industrial practices involve neutralizing wastewater to meet environmental discharge standards, but it's crucial to acknowledge that adherence to these standards is not always perfect across all industries and locations.
