"An Astrologer's Day" is a short story by R.K. Narayan about a man who poses as an astrologer to make a living. He sets up shop daily under a tree in a busy marketplace, using his wit and keen observation skills to give vague but convincing readings to his clients.
He relies on his knowledge of human nature and pre-acquired information about his clients to provide seemingly accurate predictions. One day, a stranger challenges his abilities, demanding a reading. The astrologer, after some hesitation, agrees and is shocked to recognize the stranger as a man he thought he had murdered years ago.
The astrologer manages to calm the man and convinces him to return to his village, falsely claiming that he would be in danger if he continued his search for the person who tried to kill him. Relieved, the astrologer returns home and confesses the truth about his past to his wife, revealing that he is not a real astrologer and that he had once attacked a man and left him for dead. The story is about deception, guilt, and how people can create new identities to escape their past.
