Today was absolutely magical. We're on vacation in Kyoto, Japan, and today we visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine. I've seen pictures, of course, but nothing prepared me for the reality of walking through thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain.
We started early, around 8 AM, to try and beat the crowds – somewhat successful, I think. The air was cool and crisp, and the sunlight filtered beautifully through the trees and the vermillion gates. The path started gently, lined with small shops selling kitsune (fox) statues, which are considered the messengers of Inari, the god of rice, prosperity, and business. I bought a tiny one to bring home.
As we climbed higher, the path became steeper, and the crowds thinned out. The sheer number of gates, each donated by a business or individual, was overwhelming. Seeing the inscriptions on each one, the names and dates, made me think about the dedication and belief behind each offering. I could almost feel the history seeping out of the wood.
About halfway up, we stopped at a small teahouse for matcha and dango (sweet rice dumplings). The view from there was incredible – a panoramic vista of Kyoto stretching out below. It was so peaceful, just the sound of the wind chimes and the distant city noises.
We didn't make it all the way to the summit. I decided to listen to my body and enjoy the moment instead of pushing myself to complete the entire ascent. It was the right decision. We took our time descending, soaking in the atmosphere and taking lots of pictures.
Back in the city, we had a delicious dinner of ramen and then strolled through Gion, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha. No luck with that, but the traditional wooden machiya houses were beautiful in the evening light.
What a day! My legs are aching, but my soul feels full. This trip is already exceeding my expectations. Tomorrow, we explore the Golden Pavilion! I can't wait!
