India's first commercial pilot was Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy (J. R. D.) Tata.

He received his commercial pilot's license in 1929 and is known for his contributions to Indian aviation.

In 1932, J. R. D. Tata founded Tata Airlines, which later became Air India.
